Long Branch

The Nancy St. Clair Talley 2012 Lecture Series

March 1st

John Sherman will discuss “Speechifying:  History, Vainglory and Blather.” He began his writing career as a newspaper and magazine reporter.  He began writing speeches during his years in the U.S. Congress.  During his years at The Ashby Inn, he continued writing speeches for CEOs, NGOs and politicians, including two “keynote” addresses at Democratic conventions (Ann Richards, 1988 and Evan Bayh, 1996).
Dedicated to Mr. David “Millwood” Boyce.

March 8th

Gem Bingol of the PEC will talk on “Healthy Lands, Healthy Streams—Long Branch and Beyond.”  The health of our properties—our yards, pastures, fields and forests—affect the health of our streams.  Come hear more about the condition of Long Branch and other streams in Clarke County.

March 15th

Ava Farmer, the fictitious nom de plume of Sandy Lerner, will discuss Second Impressions, the sequel Jane Austen might have authored following Pride and Prejudice. Farmer’s book, a labor of 25 years, appears on the eve of the 200th anniversary of Austen’s first book in 1813 and explores changing life in late Regency England.  A book signing will follow.

March 22nd

Julie Campbell will talk about her book, The Horse in Virginia. Formerly an editor of Virginia Cavalcade, Campbell is past president of Virginia Press Women and on the advisory committee of the Museum of the Virginia Horse.  A book signing will follow.

March 29th

Chris Ohrstrom is an internationally regarded expert on American historic interiors. He has consulted or made paint or wallpaper for Colonial Williamsburg, English Heritage, The Smithsonian Institution, the White House, Monticello, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and many others.  Ohrstrom is co-author of “A Treatise and Primer on Early American Paints,” widely regarded as the finest short work on early American architectural paints.  His talk will focus on reproducing early American wallpaper.
